Peace Sunday – A Heart for Peace

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” – Matthew 5:9

This Peace Sunday, we are invited to reflect on what it means to have a heart for peace.

What does it mean to have a heart for peace?

Having a heart for peace doesn’t mean that we ignore conflict or pretend that everything is okay. Peace is not simply the absence of disagreement or difficulty. It can involve courage, compassion, forgiveness, justice and a willingness to listen.

To have a heart for peace is to ask:

What kind of person am I becoming?

How do I respond when I encounter disagreement?

Where might I bring kindness rather than conflict?

How can my faith shape the way I live as a peacemaker?

Sometimes the smallest acts can make a difference — listening without judgement, offering encouragement, choosing words carefully, reaching out to someone who is struggling, or simply being present with another person.

Peace begins within

Our own wellbeing is also part of the journey towards peace.

When we are overwhelmed, exhausted or anxious, it can be harder to respond to others with patience and compassion. Making space for stillness, prayer, rest and reflection can help us reconnect with ourselves and with God.

Perhaps today we can take a few moments to breathe deeply and become aware of what is happening within us.

What do I need to let go of?

Where do I need peace?

What might help my heart become a little more peaceful today?

We don’t have to create perfect peace within ourselves. We can simply make a little space for God’s presence.

A heart for peace in our world

Our prayers also reach beyond ourselves.

We pray for communities experiencing conflict, for those who have lost loved ones, for people displaced from their homes, and for all those working for reconciliation and justice.

We pray for leaders and decision-makers, that they may have wisdom and courage to seek peaceful solutions.

And we pray for ourselves — that we might not become indifferent to suffering, but instead allow compassion to move us towards action.

A prayer for Peace Sunday

Loving God,

Give us hearts that long for peace.

Where there is conflict, help us to seek reconciliation.

Where there is anger, help us to respond with compassion.

Where there is fear, help us to bring hope.

Where there is division, help us to build bridges.

Give us courage to speak for justice,

wisdom to listen to others,

and grace to recognise your image in every person.

Help us to care for our own hearts,

so that we might become people who bring peace to the hearts and lives of others.

We pray for our world, our communities, our families and ourselves.

Make our hearts a place where your peace can grow.

Amen.

A simple Peace Sunday invitation

Today, take a few quiet moments and place your hand over your heart.

Breathe slowly.

As you breathe in, pray:

“God, fill my heart with your peace.”

As you breathe out:

“Help me to share your peace.”

Then ask yourself:

Where can I be a peacemaker this week?

It might be through a conversation, an act of kindness, an apology, forgiveness, listening, prayer — or simply choosing to bring a little more gentleness into the world.
