2 December Come, thou long-expected Jesus
This very familiar hymn helps us to get ready for the season of Advent. The opening line of the hymn already gives an air of expectancy about the coming of Jesus, not only as a reminder of the first time Jesus entered the world, but also a forerunner to his return.
Whenever we think about the coming of Jesus to Earth, what image pops into our minds? Upon singing or reading the rest of the hymn, what does it mean to you as you think about those words? Do we catch a glimpse of the very reason why Jesus came to earth and what he did when he was here? I wonder, do we ever take the time to just stop, think and reflect upon this great event about to unfold?
This hymn like so many of Wesley’s, is full of theology that gives us a sense of anticipation, salvation, peace and assurance. There is also a hope for our future enabled not only through Jesus’ gift of eternal life, but by the presence of the Holy Spirit dwelling daily in our lives.

Come, Lord Jesus! Come bursting into our lives.
We pray for that peace which goes beyond all understanding, just as you brought peace into a busy, bustling world.
May we know that peace for ourselves and offer it as a reflection to others, that they too might see you and respond. Amen.
