Advent Reflections 2024: Day 18

18 December   Love came down at Christmas (StF 228)

Work to end division and disconnection.

Our  world  can  seem such a divided place at times. So many people displaying hate for one another, so many countries at war. And yet we have such clear directions from our Father above on how we should love each other, our enemies as well as our friends and family.

And we see it ever so clearly in this Christmas hymn. The hymn is about God not wanting anything to separate us from him or from each other. God chose to send his Son into the world as a gift of love to ultimately redeem and save the world. Love literally came down to earth in human form to demonstrate the fullness of God’s eternal and unconditional love.

Our mission is to give our unconditional love to everyone, at Christmas and  always.  In  other  words,  whatever  we  do at Christmas, as we celebrate God’s love coming among us, should prompt us to show love for one another not just through warm feelings but through actions that make a difference in our troubled world. As the words of the hymn say: ‘Love be Yours and Love be Mine’. There is enough of God’s love for everyone, there is no need to fight for it.

Loving Lord, help us to see just what a difference love can make.

How loving one another can bring people back together again,

healing division and re-connecting people in the right way.

Making this world what you want it to be:

a place of harmony, love and peace. Amen.
