3 December Luke 21:25-36
‘Hush the noise’! How often we may have said those words when the chatter of a noisy classroom or an argument between family members becomes too much for us to bear! How much we want to ‘hush the noise’ as the clamour of war assaults our ears through our televisions and radios, the sounds of bombs and bullets, of collapsing buildings, of the weeping of those who have lost family and friends. To ‘hush the noise’ in the midst of the COP-29 summit as the excuses of richer nations seek to drown out the pleas of those poorer countries already suffering as a result of global warming and the growing fear of rising sea levels.
Did Jesus know all this as he announced these signs of his second coming, and are we alert to them? Signs not to cause us to fear, but to give us hope. Signs not to alarm us, but to warn us to be ready. Signs to comfort us that God is still in control, that God has the final word, and that the word spoken in Creation, spoken in Jesus, spoken in love will always come to pass, will never fail.

Lord, keep us alert and make us ready for the glorious day of your Coming – we can’t wait to hear those angels sing!
