About the Centre

The City Centre, with its diverse mix of residents, business, tourist and civic sectors, provides an exciting context for mission that differs from those in suburban communities. Central Buildings, Manchester, is one of the few Methodist Central Halls remaining in the country. It has strong historical and financial foundations, a growing and vibrant mission amongst the Swahili speakers of Manchester, a strong caring ministry amongst the marginalised of Manchester and a developing engagement with the Civic authorities and the Business Sector.

The staff team at Central Hall comprises two ordained ministers together with volunteers, facilities staff and partners from other organisations who have space in the building. The work at Central Hall demonstrates an approach to mission in the City Centre in ways that are contemporary and relevant to the variety of cultures that make up this vibrant part of the Northern Quarter including those for whom Swahili is a main language.

The chapel on the ground floor at Central hall provides an oasis in the City Centre, creating a calm space and a place of prayer. We often host exhibitions or prayer stations enabling visitors to engage spiritually. Our services are held at 12.30pm on a Sunday, lasting up to two hours and often followed by food. There is also a midweek communion service on the second Tuesday of the month, starting at 11.30.

Café Central, run by Greater Manchester Community Chaplaincy, is open Monday-Thursday each week, serving drinks, snacks and main meals. On Monday and Wednesday afternoons (2-4pm) the Befrienders cafe is run by volunteers from churches around the Manchester Circuit. Drinks are served without charge during this time and we are happy to listen in confidence or pray with anyone who asks.
