Vacancy: Director of Transforming Churches and Communities

There are two seats available on the Board of Directors of Transforming Churches and Communities.

Renumeration: Voluntary. Expenses paid.

Background

Transforming Churches and Communities is a Methodist rooted charity that seeks to support churches and other charitable organisations in the realisation of their mission.

There are three main wings to our work:

  1. Consultancy – supporting clients with distinct and finite projects, such as structural reviews, change management, context or “missional field” analysis, reviews, new enterprise start up, funding sourcing, and governance support.
  2. Service provision – providing the nuts and bolts support to day to day running, such as finance services, line management support, and in the past, property support..
  3. Training – we offer regular free training in grant applications and Methodist Governance for trustees, which we also have some outside parties attending who work with Methodists regularly.

We are currently experiencing higher demand for these services than ever before, from an increasingly wide geographical range. Our work comes almost entirely through word of mouth recommendations from previous clients, and we receive new enquiries weekly. It is always our goal to aid a client to become self-sufficient and empowered to carry out ongoing work themselves, rather than being dependent on us, and we share knowledge of how we work freely to enable this.

We are currently seeking a person who is invested in the empowerment and development of churches, charities and the communities they serve to join our board of directors.

TCC are committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion of all people, and are keen to increase the diversity of our board.

Time commitment:

  • Our Directors meet four times each year for approximately 2 hours online. There will be some documents released in advance of these meetings requiring review.
  • Monthly approval requests for expenses (taking less than 20 minutes each month).
  • Occasional travel to in person meetings may be requested, but this is rare.
  • Some additional email communication from matters arising.

Key Responsibilities:

  • You will be a registered Trustee of Transforming Churches and Communities (TCC) with the Charity Commission.
  • You will be an advocate for TCC and support our overall ethos and charitable aims.
  • You will support the Senior Development Manager in their running of the charity.
  • With advisement from the Senior Development Manager and the Finance Manager, make strategic decisions as to the charity’s direction and operations.
  • Approving some payments from the TCC account, for example, expenses for the Senior Development manager.
  • Deal with some grievances, as per the employment policies of TCC.

Line Management responsibilities: As a group, the Board of Directors have line management responsibility to the Senior Development Manager.

Personal Qualities

The board would benefit from someone with the following qualities:

  • Experience in managing a charity, or an understanding of charity governance.
  • The majority of our clients are Methodist Churches, and so a strong understanding of the Methodist Church and its structures would be advantageous.
  • A willingness to undergo appropriate training in Methodist Governance if this knowledge was not already in place.
  • We also invite ecumenical colleagues from non Methodist backgrounds.
  • A commitment to supporting the local community and a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • Specialist knowledge in either HR, property, governance, charitable law, or finance would be valued, but is not essential.
